ALAN TEACHER Genie Centre Menu Background

On this page you will see and learn about the friendly staff who work at Genie Family Centre. When you see us, don’t be shy, come and say ‘hello!’

We are creating videos for you all to see as well! So keep looking back!

Claire Johnson – Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

I am Claire. I am a deaf mum who is very passionate about developing positive opportunities for families with deafness. Genie has been my passion for the last 11 years, I have supported families with deafness for over 20 years, it is

heart-warming to see parents who I met as children returning to see me with their littles ones in tow.

Every child I meet has an unique personality, it is a joy to work alongside children, watching them learn, laugh and play. I enjoy listening and learning about you and your family, your experiences and your little ones inspire me to look for new and enjoyable opportunities for your families.

When you start returning with your grandchildren in tow, I will definitely feel

my age!

Minna Moffatt-Feldman – Head of Training Services

Hi! I’m Minna, Head of Service for Genie’s Training Academy.

I’m a qualified teacher and currently studying for a Doctorate in Education researching good techniques for students to maintain confidence and success in learning sign language.

As well as formal learning, I spend a lot of time with families looking at various possible communication methods. I also teach British Sign Language and support families with deaf parents and/or children learn their chosen communication.

I’m a keen animal lover. If not teaching, I'm often sorting out the Genie Family Centre fish!

Meghan Moughan – Family Link Worker

I’m Meghan, the Family Link Worker here at Genie! I’m here to offer specialist information and support services to families with deafness.  I enjoy meeting and working with all the children and families at Genie, and being able to support in any way I can.

My job also lets me be creative and have fun with the children and families at our Genie events. I plan the workshops and events which families can attend to learn, socialise and have fun!

I have worked with children and families in various settings over the years.

It’s lovely to find somewhere to work where I can combine my passion for creativity, deafness and most importantly making a difference to children and families!

Hi, I’m Alan, a teacher here at Genie.  I hold over 20 years of experience as a teacher, following the completion of my PGCE and BSL specific teacher training.   I’m qualified in iBSL BSL Studies and a qualified assessor.  I like the iBSL qualification because they have more focus on BSL skills. I have taught in both England and Wales and love learning regional variations.  I’m very proud to be a Mancunian Sign user and love teaching these signs to others.  www.genietrainingacademy.org.uk

Jordan Goucher – Finance and Administration Officer

Hi, my name is Jordan. I have been with Genie since May 2016 and I help look after our finances, funding and administration. I also assist in the smooth running of all our services.

I have personal experience of deafness within my own family and I am currently enjoying learning British Sign Language.

Jonathan Slack – British Sign Language Facilitator

I am Jonathan. I was born profoundly Deaf and British Sign Language is my first language.

I have two beautiful children, aged 4 and 2, both of whom are hearing and are bilingual (that means that they use spoken English and British Sign Language)

You'll see me at Genie events and groups. I think it’s important for deaf children to meet deaf adults – we can act as role models and understand the child’s perspective because of our own experiences. I enjoy sharing my language and culture with others. Tell me about yours, too?
